Book Return

A stainless steel outdoor book return is located in front of the library door to allow book returns when the library is closed. When the library reopens, the books will be checked in with the previous day’s date.

 

Borrowing Privileges

The library is FREE and open to the public. Library cards are available to people who live, work, attend school, or have health-related ties to the Grossmont Healthcare District.

 

Catalog

A catalog of library holdings is available online on our website www.herricklibrary.org. The staff is available to teach you how to use our online catalog. The library uses the National Library of Medicine’s classification system. An outline highlighting major health topics and their call numbers is posted at the end of the book shelves.

 

Collection

Print

The library’s print collection consists of approximately 2,000 circulating books (two weeks checkout) and non-circulating materials that include reference books, encyclopedias, health directories, journals, health-related newsletters, and anatomy charts.

Electronic and Audiovisual

Clinical videos providing education on a variety of health topics and popular movies with health themes are available in VHS and DVD formats for one-week checkout. There is no cost for this service. Public computer #10 has the A.D.A.M. Interactive Anatomy 4 software, allowing access to over 20,000 anatomical structures in four dissectible views, 3-D anatomy models, pinned anatomical illustrations, clinical illustrations, and animations.

Historical

The Herrick Library also serves as a museum for medical memorabilia and books donated by health care professionals. On exhibit are historical medical equipment, including an early Bausch & Lomb Optical microscope, a Sanborn EKG machine, and a 1950s Gomco ether machine, and numerous medical instruments.

A Suggestion Box is located on a front table to encourage ideas to improve our collection.

 

Community Information Kiosk

A display kiosk is located in the first alcove next to the copy machine. Information about community health events, workshops and programs are continually updated. Free brochures and pamphlets on a variety of health topics are available.

 

Computer Classes

The library offers free one-hour computer classes for our patrons.

• The Internet Introduction class will show you how to maneuver around the Internet and become familiar with search engines.
• The Email Basics class will teach you how to create your own free email account and how to send and receive email.
• The Health Information class will inform you how to extract valuable health information from the library’s databases.
• The Word Processing class explores the fundamentals and tools involved with making documents on the computer.

Conference Center Scheduling

The Conference Center (located across the courtyard from the library, with a 65-seat lecture hall) may be reserved for use by eligible health-related nonprofit organizations and public agencies with headquarters or main offices located within the District’s boundaries, or organizations that provide substantial services to the residents of the District. The Conference Center offers the latest in multimedia audiovisual presentation systems. Both the Library and Conference Center are fully ADA compliant. Free parking is available. Copy Machine/Printer

A copy machine is available to make copies and computer printouts. The cost is $0.10 per page for black-and-white copies, and $0.25 per page for color copies. Cash is the only accepted form of payment, with limited change available. The library supports the Medical Library Association’s position that the rights of users to copy materials for their own education and research are guaranteed under the fair-use clause of the copyright law. An explanation of this policy is posted over the copy machine.

Disability Services

The library is fully ADA compliant. The parking lot has several handicap parking spaces. Refer to the section “Reference Services” to find out how health information packets can be requested by phone. Special arrangements may be made with the Library Director for books to be checked out longer than the normal two-week period. Headphones are available at the front desk.

Displays

The library has on display 3-D anatomical models of the heart and brain with detailed keys that explain the parts. Also on display are Native American healing artifacts. A major focal point in the main foyer of the library is “Life of Kumeyaay: Remembering the Past,” a painting by nationally-known artist Gene Locklear. A portrait of Dr. William C. Herrick also hangs in the main foyer. Other paintings, prints, and photographs are located in the library’s conference and study rooms.

 

Doctors Lounge

A comfortable room with fireplace, TV/VCR/DVD, four cushioned chairs, and table with seating for six is available for physician use. It also can be reserved for health-related meetings with the Library Director’s approval.

 

Exhibits

The library occasionally hosts exhibits produced by local health organizations, nonprofit foundations, or East County artists. Past exhibits include “Memories in the Making” by the Alzheimer’s Association, “Managing Chronic Pain,” and the “Rainbow Cat” art collection by James Hubbell’s Ilan-Lael Foundation.

 

Fines and Fees

Overdue fines on all materials: $0.25 per day per item, $15.00 maximum per item.

Cash is the only accepted form of payment, with limited change available.

Library cards will not be renewed until all fines are paid.

Borrowing privileges are suspended if fines and fees combined are in excess of $5.00.

Lost or damaged item fee: $10.00 processing fee (nonrefundable) plus the price of the item.

Photocopies/printouts: Black-and-white $0.10 per page; color $0.25 per page

Fax machine: Local calls $0.50 per page; long distance calls $1.00 per page (5-page limit)

Returned check fee: $25.00

 

Grossmont Healthcare District

The Grossmont Healthcare District, a public agency formed in 1952 to build and operate Grossmont Hospital, supports various health-related community programs and services in San Diego's East County region. The District serves as landlord of Grossmont Hospital on behalf of local taxpayers, including ownership of the property and buildings. In 1991, the District leased the hospital's operations to Sharp Healthcare under a 30-year lease that runs through the year 2021. The District is governed by a five-member board of directors, each elected to four-year terms, who represent nearly 500,000 people residing within the District's 750 square miles in San Diego's East County. Health Newsletters

The library subscribes to 24 health newsletters. They are located in a swivel display unit in front of the journal stacks.

8:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon Saturday
The library is closed Sunday and Monday, as well as all California State Holidays.

 

Inter-Library Loans (ILL)

The Library is an associate member of the Serra Cooperative Library System. Patrons may request a maximum of three books/articles per month that are not part of our collection. There is no expense involved if the book/article can be found locally. If it is not available locally and the patron is willing to pay $3, Serra will search outside sources through OCLC (Online Computer Library Center).

 

Internet Access

The library has 10 computer workstations (8 PCs and 2 iMacs) in the main room, available for free public use. All are equipped with Internet access and Microsoft Word. Refer to the “Copy Machine” section for information about making printouts. The library’s Internet Use Policy is posted at each bank of computers.

 

Library Cards

Library cards are available to people who live, work, attend school, or have health-related ties to the Grossmont Healthcare District. Cards are issued for two years and may be renewed if there are no outstanding fines.

Mission Statement

The library’s mission is to meet the health information needs of residents of the Grossmont Healthcare District by providing reliable medical information to help them make informed decisions about their health and lives.

 

Movie Matinees

The library offers monthly movie matinees with feature films that include a health topic. They are shown in the library’s Doctors Lounge, usually on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 12:00 noon. Seating is limited, and all attending must be 18 years or older. Popcorn and drinks will be served. RSVP is appreciated: (619) 825-5010

 

New Books/Videos Display

A book display table is located in front of the print collection. A selection of new books and videos is featured and frequently updated.

 

Newsletter

The library publishes a quarterly newsletter that is mailed to library cardholders. It includes the library director’s program highlights, topics and dates for upcoming movie matinees and senior discussion group meetings, list of new books and videos, a feature article on a health topic, exhibit information, computer classes available to our patrons, and upcoming events and meetings.

 

Outreach Services

The library staff participates in exhibits at local health fairs to promote library services to the community. The Library Director is available to speak at local meetings and give presentations about the Library and health resources.

 

Pamphlet Service

Free pamphlets are available to the public on a variety of health topics. They are located in the first alcove, near the copy machine.

 

Parking

Free parking is available for our library patrons, including several handicap parking spaces.

 

Reference Services

The library staff is trained to assist the public in finding reliable health information, using both electronic resources and the general collection. Health information packets can be requested via the telephone (619-825-5010) by residents of the Grossmont Healthcare District who may have difficulty traveling to the library. The library staff is able to perform limited research for district residents which will be mailed at no charge. All of our resources are available for use by the public.

 

Senior Discussion Group

All are welcome to our monthly senior discussion group meetings. They are held in the library’s Doctors Lounge, usually on the fourth Wednesday of each month, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. You are invited to participate in good conversation on topics related to health and senior living. Kathy Quinn, Library Director

Kathy joined the Herrick Library in February 2007. She received her Master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLS) in 1992 from Dominican University in the Chicago area. Since then, she has worked in a variety of corporate libraries, including consulting, accounting, and financial services firms. Kathy has experience training users on a variety of information resources, conducting brief and in-depth research, managing projects, and providing excellent customer service. In 2008, she is serving as the president of the San Diego Chapter of the Special Libraries Association.

Our dedicated library assistants have been trained to help you obtain reliable resources to meet your health information needs. In addition to performing their routine duties expertly, each has special talents they bring to the library. Joanne’s expertise is in cataloging and collection development. Brian maintains our library website, creates monthly statistical reports, develops and teaches weekly computer courses, and creates exhibits, signs and newsletters. Margaret facilitates our monthly health education program and manages the library’s serials collection and free pamphlet service.


  

Study Rooms

A conference room (seating 8-10, with TV/VCR/DVD, flip chart, and marker board) and two study rooms (seating 3-4) are available for library members during open hours. To reserve the conference room please call (619) 825-5010. The study rooms are available on a first-come first-served basis.

 

Wireless Technology

The library offers wireless Internet access for personal laptops and PDAs that have this capability. Library cardholders may sign up for individual usernames and passwords that change monthly.
